A court in Yunnan announced yesterday that it will prosecute three men for selling 35kg of meat from a panda that they killed and butchered.
Two brothers surnamed Wang and another man are reported to have sold the meat as well as the animal’s feet to another man who resold it on to six more people. The three men took in around 5,000 yuan for the sale. The poachers are also said to have eaten some panda meat themselves.
The crime was discovered in a police raid last December where officers found a panda’s skin and 10kg of meat.
Panda poaching is extremely rare in China and when anything bad happens to the nation’s most-prized creatures it creates a public uproar.
There are fewer than 2,000 pandas in the wild in China. While they are endangered, their numbers have nearly doubled since the late 1970s.
Under Chinese law, hunting pandas results in 10 years in prison and in extreme cases can mean a death sentence.
