Timed brilliantly with the start of China’s hellish Golden Week, WeChat has released a new feature that will help users avoid the crowds by looking at real time foot traffic heat maps.
The maps let you see the density of people in a certain area in real time and throughout the day, so that you can glean important bids of travel planning knowledge such as Tiananmen Square is very crowded. Sad face.
According to China Channel, these new heat maps work for most major Chinese cities, including, of course, Shanghai.
Currently, the feature is only available in Chinese, so first you will have to change your language settings. Then check your WeChat wallet page and find the new feature under the “City Services” (城市服务 ) icon. Check out China Channel’s write up for a full walkthrough.
Baidu had been the leader in super cool heat map technology, but this new WeChat feature looks like it could be extremely practical as well for planning events, holidays or trips to the bathroom.
Meanwhile, WeChat continues to be at the forefront of everything. Whether it be China’s rising divorce rate, airport check-in services or snitching on smokers.
