A group of employees were cohered by their boss to crawl around a wooden path which lined a lake as punishment for failing to meet their sales targets.
According to Tencent, the cruel scene took place alongside the Ruyi Lake in Zhengzhou city, Henan province.
Eyewitnesses told reporters that nearly everyone’s shirts and pants were torn and that some staff were bleeding as a result of the ordeal. The company even dispatched one member of staff as an overseer, ensuring that all employees finished a lap of the lake and thus completing their humiliation.
After photos of the employees being mistreated were released online, netizens reacted with fury. “Where’s the trade union? Where’s the dignity and where’s the bottom line?” said user @XuMairen.
Another netizen, @Chengchengchengshiwo, wrote, “The punishment is total humiliation. Whoever proposes this idea is stupid. Are we living in the 21st century? Those superiors aren’t making their way to the top of the company from the bottom? Why can’t they treat their employees with more respect?”
@Aurora0903 remarked, “I’m also a sale person but I’ve never experienced and expected to know such punishment. We’re human beings, aren’t we?”
Sadly, this isn’t the first case of Chinese employers punishing their employees for not meeting targets. Earlier this year, a group of employees dressed in suits were asked by their boss to kneel on an overpass in Xiamen, Fujian province for 60 minutes as punishment for not completing their work.
