11 people are dead and 4 missing after Typhoon Mujigae ravaged southern China over the weekend with unexpected force, even unleashing deadly tornadoes.
According to Southern Metropolis Daily, the typhoon made landfall at around 2 p.m. on Sunday afternoon. A few hours later, videos began appearing online taken by frightened residents from the Shunde district in Foshan which showed 100-meter-high tornado tearing through the area.
Authorities in Shunde reported that at least 3 people had been killed by the sudden storm and 80 more injured. Power was temporarily cut to the area as a safety precaution as the storm closed in on an industrial park.
The typhoon gained power quickly before making landfall with winds as strong as 216 kph.
Mujigae also sank two fishing boats along the Guangdong coast, drowning three people and leaving four others missing, Xinhua reported. Meanwhile, in Guangxi, one person was killed by falling tree.
