We are nothing if not suckers for some good old-timey photographs and honestly there was no better subject matter for black-and-white photos than Shanghai during its “Golden Era.”
NetEase just republished these amazing images taken by French photographer and journalist Louis-Philippe Messelier that preserve the lost street scenes of 1930s Shanghai.
Based in the French Concession, Messelier juggled a business in wool with taking photographs for the French Journal of Shanghai. He seemed to have focused most on Shanghai’s busy alleys and colorful street performances, but he also made time to document opera performers in Beijing and duck farmers in the suburbs.
