Certain parts of Qinghai Lake have been turned into a rubbish dump by Chinese tourists after the Golden Week rush. According to Sina News, there were 5,343 tourists on the first day of the national holiday alone, which represents an increase of 20% to the year before.
Visitors to the lake have left the area so polluted that Sina News has dubbed it a “rubbish shame.” The SCMP reports that according to the Qinghai Lake Tourism Group, some tourists criticized sanitation workers when they were asked not to throw rubbish on the ground.
Qinghai Lake is China’s largest and known as one of its most beautiful scenic spots. The Chinese describe it as a lush wetland with a variety of beautiful colors and flowers. It is also one of the most popular destinations among Chinese tourists.
Chinese netizens on Weibo have reacted with disgust, and have criticised the behaviour of their countrymen. One user made an appeal for “civilized tourism”. Given the antics of Chinese tourists abroad, the call for more civilized tourism from Chinese tourists is certainly one that will be appreciated across the world.
Of course, this whole ordeal could have been prevented if the CCP had merely added “do not pollute” to its rather long behaviour guide for Chinese tourists.
