Residents of Yongkang, Zhejiang province were witness to a peculiar scene earlier this week of a 17-year-old kid shuffling through the streets with his hands and feet chained together followed by his loving mother.
Passersby took pictures and shot video of the mother and son (because why not?) that ended up making their way online for netizens to mock and criticize.
According to NetEase, eyewitnesses said that the mother was furious with her no good son because he simply refused to work and would instead run away and try to hide from his family.
“He never wants to work and always just runs away,” the mother told curious bystanders. “Runs away and hides from his family. We search for a long time, and then once we find him, he runs away again! I have no other option.”
We’ve seen public humiliation used as a parenting tactic before, but we’re uncertain about its track record. In August, one Hong Kong “tiger mom” made her daughter kowtow in the street following a poor badminton practice performance. In a more extreme example, in 2011, a couple from Anhui province tied up their 12-year-old son from a metal frame used for hanging clothes and used a whip to teach him a lesson after he was caught stealing 300RMB from their purse.
However, most netizens are skeptical that the punishment will work.
“You know, now he’ll be even more likely to run away,” commented one netizen from Jiangsu.
