Tensions remain high over some saliva spat on the Shanghai Metro floor over the weekend. After video went viral online showing a Line 8 passenger going on a profanity-laced tirade against his fellow commuters after they criticized him for spitting on the train carriage floor, the star of the video has been subjected to an all-out human flesh search by netizens across the Chinese web, desperate to find out his identity.
At the end of the investigation, many netizens reported their findings on Weibo, stating that the man was a student at East China Normal University’s Minhang Campus.
However, yesterday evening the ECNU Communist Youth League fiercely denied the rumor on its official Weibo account, writing that they had performed a full investigation checking all relevant sources and had confirmed without a doubt that the “Spitting Man” was not a student at their fine university.
“The Internet spreads terrible rumors! We are very angry that unconfirmed reports were allowed to spiral out of control and propagate harmful lies about ECNU. Please, everyone, correctly use the power of the Internet and carefully use the human flesh search,” the post read.
In the viral video, the man is seen shouting swear words at fellow passengers, repeatedly calling one woman a bitch even with young children within close earshot. Eventually, fellow passengers confront the man and even attack him, forcing him to flee that section of the train.
