A video has emerged of a schoolboy being verbally abused, slapped and forced to kneel in the street by the elderly man he accidentally cycled into.
According to Sina, the incident took place on a road in Linqing city, Shandong province. While on his way to school, the cyclist reportedly collided with an elderly man, injuring his leg.
The cyclist made several apologies for the accident, but as the video shows this did not appease the old man, who forces the boy from his bike, slaps him repeatedly and makes him kneel in the road in front of several bystanders to humiliate him.
Despite the child’s repeated insistence that he would be late for school if not allowed to continue, the old man remains unsatisfied and continues to yell at the boy for colliding with him.
In addition to the almost universal condemnation of the old man’s attitude, many commenting on the story were incredibly sarcastic in their replies, heaping scorn upon the elderly in Chinese society.
“Square dancing and throwing themselves in front of cars to extort money — these are the hobbies of elderly people today. Looks like bullying people is becoming yet another extra-curricular activity for old folk,” one netizen remarked.
“Actually, this old man is not bad at all,” said one netizen. “Read the news, the cyclist disobeyed traffic regulations and hit him, but he didn’t even try and get some money from the boy.”
The elderly man has since been detained by police for causing a disturbance. An investigation is currently underway.
