Residents in Henan province were horrified to discover a pile of dog carcasses hidden in the trunk of a car belonging to a man who fled from the scene of a car crash.
According to NetEase, at around 10:30 a.m. yesterday morning a journalist discovered a commotion at the scene of a car accident while driving through Suiyang district of Shangqiu city. After pushing through the crowds, he laid eyes upon what the crowd had been gawking at.
A black car with an Anhui licence plate had collided with another car. Following the crash the driver ran from the scene but was soon apprehended. After noticing a foul stench emanating from the car, residents opened the car to find the trunk packed full of dog carcasses.
“I immediately thought that this must be the work of a dog stealing gang” said a passerby surnamed Liu, who told reporters that he and others had cooperated to bring down the driver of the vehicle. “There were other people in the car as well, they all fled in the confusion. I didn’t see exactly how many there were.”
“The car is from Anhui, so most likely the men steal dogs at night and then drive to locations outside the province to sell them,” said Liu. “The dogs appear to be unharmed, so they most likely were poisoned. If anyone tried to eat them now it could cause them serious harm.”
Police on the scene tried to remove the dog carcasses but found that there was not enough room in the boot. They estimate that in total the car contained between 40 to 50 dogs, one of which was still alive.
Police are currently holding the driver of the car for integration. He refused to be interviewed by reporters.
