Another week, another touching story of animal compassion in Hong Kong’s New Territories, not sure what’s going on there, other than that local drivers really need to start paying more attention.
Last week, a dog named Blackie was out playing the middle of a street in Yuen Long with a friend at around 4 p.m., when his playmate was tragically hit by a car and killed.
With his companion’s lifeless body lying in the middle of road, Blackie stood in front and protected it from passing cars. According to a local resident surnamed Li who arrived at the scene around 7 p.m., a compassionate motorist eventually dragged the dog’s body to the sidewalk, to save Blackie from sharing his friend’s fate.
The faithful friend stood guard beside his comrade’s body for some 10 hours, waiting in vain for him to wake up. At 2 a.m., Li finally got animal control workers to come and take the dog’s body away. Even with his friend gone, Blackie continued to watch over the spot on the sidewalk until 5 a.m. in the morning.
Last week, a bull was hit and killed by a car while crossing a road in the New Territories. The bull’s comrades tried in vain to push his body from the road and to safety. Unsuccessful, they instead huddled around his body before eventually being led away.
