Netizens woke up this morning to deeply unsettling images of dozens of Singles’ Day packages strewn damaged and broken across the pavement after a cargo truck overturned on the highway.
The accident occurred yesterday in Xuchang, Henan province. Fortunately, the driver was not seriously injured. Unfortunately for some shoppers, a few of the packages look to have been damaged from the fall.
For the most part however, netizens understand what is most important:
“Those are all just things. As long as the driver is ok then everything is fine,” commented one netizen from Hebei.
Alibaba smashed all the records this Singles’ Day, recording sales of $14.3 billion during the 24 hour period, up 60% from last year. In total, some 1.7 million workers, 400,000 vehicles, 5,000 warehouse and 200 airplanes are going to be needed to deliver the millions of boxes to buyers’ doorsteps.
With this insane volume, it is not unexpected that delivery workers have tried to cut a few corners:
