One Beijing resident’s grand plans for a personal, multilevel garage under his downtown hutong home were foiled yesterday after city officials discovered the cavernous and very illegal underground bunker.
The Beijing Times reports that the partly-built basement is at least 700 square meters in area and includes three separate levels, according to information learned from the Dongcheng District Office.
When questioned about why exactly he needed such a massive underground space, the resident reportedly told police that he was simply building an innocent and spacious garage. Definitely not a dungeon. Hutong parking can be a bitch, you know?
It turns out that much like grand rooftop villas, building your own basement of this size is all kinds of illegal in Beijing. No word if they are going to make the man fill it all back in himself.
