A 30-year-old man from Guangdong province who nearly died while trying to castrate himself in order to fulfil his dream of becoming a woman has been given free plastic surgery after his story went viral earlier this week.
Li Xiongjin, originally from Hunan province, spoke of his life-long dream of womanhood during an appearance on the Chinese reality show called “U Beauty,” which gives its participants free plastic surgery to make themselves look pretty.
According to Li, since adolescence he has had a different perception of his gender. He said he hated his masculine appearance and has tried all means to get rid of his male characteristics.
Desperate to become a woman, Li began taking female hormones seven years ago. Three years ago he then attempted to castrate himself, purchasing the necessary surgical equipment online. He nearly died during the botched DIY operation and the excessive bleeding that followed.
After graduating from university, Li worked at a factory in Guangzhou, Guangdong province. He finally mustered up the courage to undergo a physical sex change, but when he inquired about the operation he found it was too expensive.
Following his appearance on the U Beauty reality show, he was finally given his chance to become a woman.
Li said on national television this week that he only told his parents about his lifelong “dream of womanhood” one month ago, and that his mother and father were in support of his decision to undergo a sex change.
Li’s mother later revealed that she blames herself for never paying enough attention to her son’s needs and she said she regrets letting him suffer alone.
