Even if you work for one of the world’s largest electronics manufacturers with more than 1 million fellow employees, it always pays to know what your big boss looks like, just in case you ever happen to bump into him.
Two Foxconn workers didn’t make the best first impression on Terry Gou after he told them to put out their cigarettes inside a non-smoking area near the dining hall of a Foxconn factory in Shenzhen.
They told the company’s founder and chairman: “Who are you? It’s none of your fucking business.”
According to The Paper, Gou did not take kindly to being cursed out by his employees. He called the factory manager and together they laid into the workers.
One part of the confrontation was captured in a seven-second video that has gone viral across the Chinese internet.
“If the manager doesn’t fix you, then I will fix you,” Guo shouts. “Foxconn doesn’t need workers like you.”
Foxconn, the Taiwanese electronics assembly manufacturer that supplies companies like Apple, has had its problems in China in the past. Most significantly with workers committing suicide, dying from overwork and protesting and brawling over low wages.
Back in 2012, Gou had a prescient quote for just this occasion:
“Foxconn has a workforce of over one million worldwide and as human beings are also animals, to manage one million animals gives me a headache.”
