The story of 13-year-old Feng Molin, who has selflessly taken care of his blind parents for the past nine years, is the latest incredible story that is tugging at the heartstrings of people across China.
Feng’s mother has been blind since childhood, and his father also lost his sight in 2006 after suffering acute meningitis, when Feng was just 4 years of age. From that point on Feng has looked after his disabled parents, cooking, cleaning and doing farm work, as well as still attending school, according to a report from CCTV News.
The struggling family, who live in northwest China’s Shaanxi province, have since then lived on subsistence allowances from the government and charitable donations from the community.
After his local village school was closed, Feng had to move to the central school of Yanmen during his second year at primary school. Unfortunately, the school is a long way from his home and that has forced Feng to live on campus during the school week.
He must then travel home on weekends to do the cleaning work and prepare all the food and firewood for the coming week for his parents. Alongside the litany of household chores, Feng still manages to find time to complete his school work.
Feng’s courage and determination has touched the hearts of netizens and since his story has emerged the family has received many kind offers of assistance. One man even reportedly offered to adopt Feng himself and also provide a nanny to take care of his parents.
Although Feng has welcomed the help of financial donations, he has refused to relinquish his role and filial responsibility as his parents’ care provider and has shot down the possibility of adoption.
“Staying with my parents is my greatest joy,” he said, “I will work hard to create a better future with my own hands.”
Feng’s plight is just the latest tragic but heartwarming story to emerge in China about people’s incredible efforts to care for their loved ones against all odds, including this tale of true love, and another from a brave young boy.
