A middle-aged woman was tied to a tree and a sign reading “female thief” hung around her neck after she was apprehended by three supermarket employees for stealing.
According to NetEase, the suspect had previously been caught on security footage stealing four bottles of shampoo from the supermarket in Sichuan province.
When she made the foolish mistake of returning to the supermarket on Thursday, three loyal employees apprehended her and then proceeded to tie her to a tree outside the store.
One employee involved, who was fined dozens of yuan following the initial theft, said that their actions had been necessary in order to prevent her from escaping and to encourage surrounding businesses to be more vigilant.
Netizens commenting on the event were polarized in their responses. One user named @大哥萌萌哒 wrote, “It’s a proper way to deal with thieves. It’s just like the saying goes, ‘the rat crossing the street is chased by all’.”
@0帅的惊动了党 disagreed, saying: “The employees have no rights to punish a thief,”
“I support this treatment. It’s good to make her remember her ill conduct better,” said a netizen from Xinjiang. “Everyone has two hands. Why doesn’t she do something good to the public?!”
“The employees have overdone it. They could have reported to the police. That they took the matter in their own hands wasn’t proper,” said another.
This isn’t the first time that citizens have resorted to vigilante justice in order to punish thieves. Earlier this month, a 40-year-old woman was spotted tied up outside a meat market in Nanning, Guangxi province. Vendors said that they needed to teach her a lesson because she was always stealing.
