More than 600 inmates squared off in a square dancing competition at one Jiangxi prison last Friday with around 80 families of the convicts invited to attend and watch the spectacle.
The prisoners at the Yuzhang Prison in Nanchang were divided into 11 groups. The choreography was accompanied with several of the most popular songs from recent years. One was “Xiaopinguo,” an inescapable hit from 2014 by the Chopstick Brothers, who won an International Song Award category for the tune. “Gangnam Style,” by Korean pop mega-sensation PSY in 2012 was another popular selection.
Tai chi, waist drum and dragon dance performances took place between dance competition events.
The warden of the prison told reporters that the purpose of the event was for inmates and their families to have some fun and to help the inmates reform faster.
A few wives of the inmates also got up and danced alongside their husbands. “I can’t believe that I got the chance to dance with my husband on stage,” confessed one woman. “I hope that he will cherish the environment here and that he will be reformed.”
