A medical school in Xi’an is facing allegations of animal abuse after an animal rescue team posted photos showing a pack of injured dogs with their mouths bound shut, their arms and legs tied, their bellies cut open and their chests charred.
Some of the dogs were dead; others were still breathing, bleeding out from their wounds, and shivering from the cold. They were found on the rooftop of a building at Xi’an Medical University’s Weiyang campus.
In addition to the lifeless and near-death dogs, there were twenty more live dogs to be used in future experiments, chained to pipes and huddled in corners. The relief group waited until 8:00 pm for a worker to eventually come up and feed the dogs.
Netizens have expressed outrage at the careless disposal of these canines, their bodies spent after being used for medical experiments. Close to their bodies, tools from the experiments were found, including bloody stake-like wooden sticks and discarded packaging of an animal anesthetic, Lumianning. One image also appears to show one of the dogs being hanged alive.
A teacher from the university explained that they put the dogs on the roof after injecting them with anesthesia for a “specialist institute” to deal with. When asked why they didn’t euthanize the dogs, the teacher responded that they “didn’t have the facilities.”
A student participating in the study said that they were cutting open their appendixes to practice sutures, and that the reason the dogs’ mouths were tied shut was for fear of attack. An official from the school stated they will work on improving the handling of carcasses. For now, they have suspended the experiment.
Dogs can often have it tough in China whether its falling down frigid manholes or being stuffed in trunks, but there are also canine lovers trying to make a difference, just check out the story of this Changchun millionaire who went broke saving strays from the slaughterhouse.
