A university in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, has opened a cute/nauseating Hello Kitty-themed canteen earlier this week.
The 3,500-square-meter canteen at the Zhejiang Gongshang University in the city’s Xiasha District also operates as a restaurant and can accommodate up to 800 diners, reports Hangzhou News
The restaurant serves both Asian and Western food and has already quickly become a huge hit among university students and other city locals alike.
School officials explained that the canteen was given the cutesy revamp because they felt students wanted something more fun than those boring regular cafeterias. Naturally in China that meant decking the place out in homage to the ever popular Japanese cat.
Staff went on to add that while the Hello Kitty theme was primarily chosen because most of the students are female, Kitty does apparently have a broader fan base. “Girls love Hello Kitty but boys also like it,” explained the canteen manager, surnamed Zhou.
Of course Hangzhou is also lucky enough to have the Hello Kitty theme park on its doorstep that opened in Zhejiang in July this year. It’s a must visit.
There seems to be no end to the universal appeal and ambitions of the Hello Kitty brand, with the existence of themed beer, champagne, planes, hotels and even maternity hospitals .
