Just when you thought this latest airpocalypse fiasco couldn’t get any worse, Shanghai customs officers just discovered 120,000 fake respiratory masks, all of which were packaged and designed to resemble U.S. manufacturer 3M.
The fake masks were found in two separate raids during inspections at a Shanghai customs site. Several people have been detained while police search for the bootleg king of this operation.
3M stated wearing the fake masks would only pose more health risks. “Those masks were poorly made with inferior materials, and don’t meet the purifying standard,” they added. Wang Jian, director of respiratory medicine at Shanghai No. 9 People’s Hospital, told the Global Times, “Phony masks that have not been inspected by health authorities can cause allergic reactions and may harm the wearers’ health.”
Many people now worry that their masks may be unauthentic. One Weibo user wrote, “I feel I’m not poisoned to death by the smog, but am choked to death by the smell of the mask. Is it fake?”
