Two men in Guangxi’s Gongcheng county were reportedly caught stealing dogs on December 13th and were savagely beaten by angry villagers as a result. One man died from injuries sustained during the beatings. The villagers were acting out of fear and rage that the men planned to eat their beloved pets, but as the gruesome photos show, they ended up dispensing out more cruelty than justice.
In the set of disturbing photos, the men have been stripped of their shirts and jackets and their hands are bound behind their backs. The villagers used a crossbow to beat the men, and one man can be seen with heaps of salt poured over his wounds. By the time paramedics arrived, it was already too late for one of the men.
The village is located in a region of China that has a tradition of eating dog meat. The province is home to the infamous Yulin Dog Meat Festival, held every year in June, which sees as many as 10,000 dogs being skinned alive, butchered and eaten as part of a fun-filled summer solstice celebration.

Nine residents of the village were interrogated by police, and three people surrendered themselves by Monday afternoon for their involvement in the horrific violence.
Currently in China, there is a rising trend of vigilantes who try to make up for the government’s lack of animal rights laws by taking matters into their own hands. Often, the animal crusaders get carried away and inflict harsh, inhumane punishment on the alleged perps, such was the case earlier this year of five animal rights advocates who forced the feline abusers to eat cat feces, only later to discover they had the wrong men.
