The Second World Internet Conference being held in Wuzhen this week has aggravated local reporters with its preferential treatment of international attendees, who alone were allowed to access websites typically forbidden in China.
According to SCMP, honored foreign guests were given first class treatment with free Mi Note devices from Chinese tech company Xiaomi, which included an app providing handy hints about the conference. In addition all the usual censored suspects were again unblocked for international representatives for the conference’s duration.
A Hong Kong media outlet representative described being placed in a nearby hotel and given a special code with which to access the likes of Facebook and Google. Meanwhile, mainland reporters bemoaned that they were snubbed of all of the above.
This is all in accordance with China’s vision of “cyber-sovereignty” that Xi Jinping laid out in his keynote speech on Tuesday that set the stage for the world’s most ironic conference, attended by dozens of foreign executives from across the world.
