A man in his 70s selling vegetables at a market in Wuhan was beaten and stabbed after he refused to pay the fee demanded by local management staff.
According to NetEase, the incident took place at around 7 a.m. on Friday morning at the entrance to the Changshan Farm Produce Market.
“Two young men asked the elderly man to pay five yuan management fee, but he only paid three yuan,” said an eyewitness. “One of them started beating the man and pulled out a knife which had been strapped to his leg and stabbed the man three times.”
The eyewitness also said that the two men have been collecting fees from vendors in the market for years. Most of the vendors hate them but don’t dare speak a word against them.
The elderly man, who sells lotus roots and sweet potatoes, was rushed to the hospital for treatment shortly after the incident.
Local police released a notice on on their Weibo account that afternoon, identifying the attacker as a man surnamed Zhou. He is being held in custody pending further investigation.
