Three new extensions to the Shanghai Metro opened this weekend, adding another 27 stations and taking the network to 617 kilometers in length.
According to Shanghai Daily, the new extensions were added to lines 11, 12 and 13.
Line 12 has sixteen new stations, nine of which are interchanges, more than on any other line on the Metro network. Nine more stations were added on Line 13.
Only two new stations opened on Line 11, Luoshan Road and Xiuyan Road, but a station at the happiest place on Earth, Shanghai Disney Resort, is scheduled to open next year. Bus services will operate close to the new stations, the city’s transport commission said.
The Shanghai metro is continuing to expand at breakneck speed, with four entirely new metro lines scheduled to open by the end of 2020. At present it is the largest rapid transit network by route length, but the Beijing metro still enjoys (perhaps enjoy isn’t the right word) a far larger annual ridership.
