A county official has been removed from his post after knocking down two pedestrians while drunk driving and fleeing from the scene of the crime.
According to NetEase, the incident took place in the early hours of the morning on December 25 outside a bar in Yichuan county, Shaanxi province. Eyewitnesses say that an off-road vehicle with Shaanxi licence plates collided with two pedestrians surnamed Bian and Li.
Following the crash, the car drove off into the night without stopping. Photos and videos taken by bystanders show the two victims lying in the road with blood flowing from wounds sustained to the head.
The next day, the Yichuan county government released a statement saying that Bian had been killed in the accident while Li was in hospital receiving treatment. It promised that an investigation was underway.
A representative from the county public security bureau spoke to a reporter from China Business News later that day, stating that the driver of the vehicle was deputy director of the Hukou Waterfall Scenic Area named Li Dongping. Li had reportedly turned himself in a few hours after the collision.
“We’ve already confirmed that he had been drinking before he got into the car. As to exactly how drunk he was, we’re waiting to get the result of tests,” he said. “We are currently detaining him in custody.”
Here are some pictures of the scenic area which the now disgraced Li Dongping was in charge of that we posted to Facebook yesterday:
