Another year, another treasure trove of iconic stories about China’s one and only fearless and sexy leader. From dining on British pub food to rebuffing Mark Zuckerberg’s advances, Xi Jinping had a jampacked 2015. Here’s our personal highlight reel.
10) Waving his feminist flag at the United Nations
Speaking at the United Nations, Xi lauded his country’s record on women’s rights and gender equality. Meanwhile, the U.S. and other human rights critics struck back by highlighting how China had just jailed five prominent women’s rights activists on International Women’s Day.
9) Kicking a football around with Manchester City
Snubbing Manchester United, football superfan Xi visited the home of Manchester City to snap his most iconic selfie to date.
8) Getting his very own app
For those of us in need of a little socialism with Chinese characteristics-based wisdom when on the go, a “Learn from Xi” app was launched this year to serve all of our ideological needs. It’s the “Little Red App” of the future!
7) Getting a raise
This year, Xi, along with the other six members of the Politburo Standing Committee, saw a nice 62% hike in monthly salaries, with civil servants celebrating their first payroll increase since 2006. Hope he doesn’t spend it all in one place.
6) Becoming a best-selling author
Xi’s record-breaking classic The Governance of China took the world by storm this year, particularly in the tiny island country of the UK where British politicians and China experts alike flocked to the London Book Fair to sing the praises of this masterpiece for our time.
“We are together. Let us remain so, and let us love the book.”
5) Feasting at the White House
While Xi’s favorite treat of steamed dumplings wasn’t on the menu for his state dinner at the White House in September neither was “Double-sized Big Macs.” America is all about finding compromise.
4) Getting hit on by international students
So, how would you describe Xi? Humble? Wise? Cute? These were just some of the answers given by foreign students after People’s Daily asked them that eternal question “Who is Xi Dada?”
3) Being presented with the honor of naming Mark Zuckerberg’s unborn child
Just as Xi has steadfastly declined to unblock Facebook, he was also unwilling to yield even an inch when the Facebook founder abruptly asked him for help in naming his kid.
2) Dining on authentic fish and chips at a British pub
Tired of the crap they were feeding him at Buckingham Palace during his UK visit, Xi requested an outing to British Prime Minister David Cameron’s favorite pub for some real English food and a pint. Watch the historic visit below:

1) Shaking hands with the Taiwanese president
In a sudden and historic summit in November, Xi met with his counterpart from the other side of the strait, Ma Ying-jeou, marking the first time that the leaders of China and Taiwan have met in more than a half a century.
The two Misters confirmed this new stage in their relationship by making up for lost time with an 82-second long handshake:
A historic 80-sec handshake, 30-sec wave.
