Sometimes you’ll hear foreigners complain about “bad China days.” Well, here are ten of the worst from the past year:
10) Foreign fare jumper vs. Shanghai Transit Authority
This guy was caught trying to hop the turnstiles inside the Shanghai Metro in October. He was quickly made an example of and forced to pay a fine of 84 yuan.
9) Rowdy laowai vs. metro commuters
In September, photos appeared online showing a group of foreigners swinging on hand rails, kicking each other and generally just having a grand old time frolicking around inside the Shanghai Metro to the great annoyance and outrage of some fellow passengers.
8) Sunbathing foreigners vs. uptight residents
A group of foreign women that went sunbathing in their bikinis in Shanghai’s Fuxing Park became the object of local and online vitriol and resentment after creepy candid photographs of them somehow made the news.
7) Bus urinator vs. fellow commuters
The bus driver said that they were traveling through Jiangning district when the foreign passenger suddenly fell off of his seat. A few elderly passengers attempted to help him up when he began to urinate. Police were quickly called to take the man away.
6) Foreign knitters vs. Shanghai fun police
A pair of foreign teachers led a “yarn bombing” of some trees in Shanghai’s French Concession, but their adorable tree sweaters were quickly removed by police, despite local support.
5) Laowai swimmer vs. young Chinese girl
The young girl, called Yuan Yuan, had been swimming in the pool with her friends on the afternoon of July 4 when she collided with a man doing laps in the same lane. The foreigner is seen in security footage picking her up and angrily flinging her into the next lane.
4) Eight foreigners vs. three curious Chinese men
Three Chinese men were beaten up by a group of foreigners at a night market in Xi’an after they had approached the strange-looking laowai in order to share a drink and snap some photos.
3) 100 shirtless Spartans vs. the Beijing police
In July, Beijing’s Sanlitun village was invaded by a hundred laowai hunks dressed up as Spartacus warriors by a local eatery for a promotional event. It was all fun and games until the cops showed up to break up the party for “obstructing traffic.”
2) English expat vs. Taipei Metro racist
10-year Taiwan resident Christopher Raymond Hall and his Taiwanese girlfriend boarded a crowded metro carriage on the Danshui-Xinyi Line. They noticed that a man in a security guard’s uniform was staring at them strangely and mouthing out words, so they tried to covertly move to another carriage. However, the man followed and then launched into an epic tirade of obscenities, racial epithets and insults. They recorded the incredible exchange which would later turn the man into a social pariah.
1) Foreign teacher vs. the world
Shocking footage from Nanjing captured the moment that one foreign teacher absolutely snapped and took out his frustration on an elderly Chinese man.
Kind reminder: If you’re an expat that is feeling particularly aggressive and resentful toward China, you can always leave whenever you want.
WE LEAVE YOU WITH THIS…
Chinese… they're all speaking it.Or pretending to, at least.
