Speaking a day after the Chinese premiere of the latest Star Wars installment, Producer Kathleen Kennedy said she felt “incredibly confident” about the film’s entry into the Chinese market.
According to Shanghai Daily, the film premiered at the Shanghai Grand Theater on December 27. It will hit cinemas across China on January 9.
Kennedy made the comments at a press conference alongside Director J.J. Abrams, actor John Boyega and actress Daisy Ridley. Abrams was reported to have said he was thrilled to see people “laughing and cheering in exactly the same places that we’ve seen other audiences.”
“In ‘The Force Awakens’ I want to tell a brand new story with new characters,” he said. “It’s a testament to the power of cinema, that it does not matter where you’re from, you can get caught up in a story.”
As the quota for foreign films was already capped out before Star Wars: The Force Awakens applied for access to the market, it was unable to release along with other major markets in December 2015.
But while we wait, we can at least enjoy the following trailer which has been reworked for the Chinese audience.
