North Korea will definitely not be getting support from China on the matter of its purported new hydrogen bomb, reportedly tested just this morning some 100km from Chinese territory.
According to DPRK state media KCNA, the underground testing of a miniaturized hydrogen bomb was a “complete success,” propelling North Korea into the “rank of advanced nuclear states,” like the PRC:
The US has gathered forces hostile to DPRK [Democratic People’s Republic of Korea] and raised a slanderous human rights issue to hinder DPRK’s improvement.. It is just to have H-bomb as self-defence against the US having numerous and humongous nuclear weapons. The DPRK’s fate must not be protected by any forces but DPRK itself.
The rest of the world, however, isn’t impressed. In a press briefing today the China’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement cementing its firm opposition. Here’s what spokeswoman Hua Chunying had to say:
China is steadfast in its position that the Korean Peninsula should be denuclearized and nuclear proliferation be prevented to maintain peace and stability in Northeast Asia. We strongly urge the DPRK to honor its commitment to denuclearization, and to cease any action that may deteriorate the situation. The peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and in Northeast Asia meet the common interests of all concerned. China is determined to advance denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula, and settle the nuclear issue through the six-party talks.
China is thus in firm agreement with South Korea, Japan, Britain, the US, and Australia on the matter. Needless to say, that Moranbong Band concert probably won’t be rescheduled for real any time soon.
