A 98-year-old woman at a Shaanxi nursing home who became famous online for her inspiring courage in pursuing true love has recently been gifted a diamond ring by an admiring netizen.
According to a local news outlet, Yuan Decai met her current husband Liu Zhaomin at a nursing home in Zhenping county in 2012 and the two quickly fell in love, despite the fact that Liu is 35 years younger than his lovely wife..
When the couple decided to tie the knot, nobody supported the idea and some even tried to break up the relationship. “Well, for one thing, their age difference could present a big challenge for them living together,” said Yang Facai, president of the nursing home. “For another, Liu is illiterate and he’s been living alone here for years.”
Outraged by everyone’s doubt, Yuan threatened to jump from the top of a building in order to prove her devotion to Liu and her determination to get married.
After local media reported on Yuan’s story last October, a Weibo user from Beijing named @Xinjueluodeheimao was so touched by their twilight romance that she decided to donate a diamond ring worth nearly 20,000 yuan to the couple.
“It’s rare to see any Chinese people that are still so passionately in love at such an old age. Some elderly people may be too shy to speak out their love. Her attitude towards life and her courage and determination in pursuing love are really worth learning from,” the netizen told the Shaanxi-based Huashang Daily.
At a nursing home event, Liu was photographed slipping the ring on Yuan’s finger, promising to take care of her. Yuan’s face radiated with happiness and joy.
When she was younger, Yuan had a son with her first husband, but the child died of illness when he was just seven. At the age of 60, Yuan married again, but her second husband would also pass away. Unable to support herself financially, she was sent to live in a nursing home in 2008, where she would go on to discover love once again.
