An unfortunate driver in Hubei has recently been branded with the modern equivalent of the Scarlet Letter, the word “mistress” painted in red onto the outside of her white Honda.
The rather distinctive vehicle was spotted in Jingzhou city yesterday morning, parked and driving around while decorated on all four sides with the Chinese word “Xiaosan,” meaning mistress.
Fellow citizens were quick to take photos of the disgraced car and then upload them onto Weibo, where it soon became a trending topic. Once again, the trusty old human flesh search was brought out with netizens discovering that the Honda Fit was registered in May 2011 to an owner in her forties who is suspected to work for a local bank.
If the woman is in fact the mistress of some angry wife’s husband, then she is lucky so far to get away with just some modest public embarrassment and minor vandalism. In China, angry wives seeking revenge have been known to do much more, often involving some combination of stripping and shaming.
