Chinese Premier Li Keqiang stopped by the coal-producing province of Shanxi on Wednesday taking part in an inspection tour of the Shanxi Coal Coking Group.
Li thanked the workers for their hard work, saying that in spite of the fact that they spend the day toiling in the dark, their efforts light up the lives of people everywhere. Aww.
The world’s 12th most powerful person continued with the praise, declaring that the miners were the backbone of Shanxi and even of the nation itself.
Li rode a mine cart along with workers as part of his inspection. They rode for 6 kilometers and walked along a narrow path for 1km at a depth of more than 300 meters.
At mineshaft 33413, Li saved the day by using a telephone to contact dispatchers to report a small build up of gas. Li urged the mining company to remain vigilant in monitoring conditions and ensuring the safety of its miners. Next time, he won’t be there to help.
In the end, he was in and out in two hours.
Coal mining is a tough gig. Back in April 2015, another coal mine in Shanxi flooded, causing the death of hundreds of workers, and perhaps this official visit. But not to worry, wherever there is pain, suffering or hardship there is Premier Li to provide a much-needed photo op.
