Oh giant golden Great Helmsman, we hardly knew thee!
Less than a week after images went viral showing a mammoth statue of the PRC’s seminal leader seated out in the middle of nowhere in Henan, we are sad to have to inform you that Mega Mao is gone and won’t be coming back.
People’s Daily has confirmed images circulating around the Chinese internet earlier today, reporting that the 3 million RMB statue in rural Tongxu county has been torn down as an illegal structure. Apparently, no one involved thought to get the proper permits before building a 36-meter-tall golden Chairman Mao.
In the photo, Mao appears to have had his arms, legs and ass completely removed while a black cloth is draped over his head, presumably to hide the shame.
“I heard it was destroyed yesterday,” a local delivery worker, who asked not to be named, told the Guardian. “I heard it was because it had occupied a farmer’s land.”
The resident also said the identity of Mao’s destroyers was a mystery. “I do not know [who destroyed it],” she said. “I haven’t been there to take a look.”
Here’s one last look at the glory and the majesty that has now been so cruelly erased from this Earth:
Goodnight, sweet prince.
