An impoverished villager from Hebei province has recently made headlines for all the wrong reasons after his misguided attempt to cure his daughter of a rare disease put her in hospital.
According to NetEase, 33-year-old Wang Jingshuai had become rather poor and has been on the dole for years after his parents fell ill. His father suffered a stroke eight years ago and his mother’s health had also deteriorated.
Things turned for the worse after his daughter, Wang Menyao, came down with a sudden fever at the end of 2011. She was later diagnosed with aplastic anemia at a local hospital.
Wang has exhausted all of his savings paying for medical treatment and is heavily in debt. In his desperation he turned to remedies from folk medicine. After his friend convinced him it would be a good idea, Wang bought a cobra and allowed it to bite his daughter.
Unsurprisingly, Wang’s daughter was reportedly uncomfortable after being bitten by the snake and was soon after rushed to hospital. After being treated for poisoning she is now in a stable condition.
Wang feels regret and remorse for what he’s done, but feels that he had to take a chance to cure his daughter. The report does not say if police have launched an investigation into the incident.
Last year in a similarily desperate application of traditional Chinese medicine, a man from Yunnan province came up with an idea of baking himself over a handmade wooden grill in order to “burn” his cancer away.
