Each winter, the Summer Palace’s 700,000 square meter Kunming Lake turns into the capital’s largest ice skating rink.
With a new batch of smog expected to hit the area on Tuesday, locals and tourists alike appear to be taking the opportunity while they can to frolic on one of China’s most recognizable landmarks with thousands of people arriving over the weekend.

The Kunming Lake was named by Qianlong in 1750 at the start of his extensive project to enlarge a natural lake to meet the growing needs of his spectacular imperial gardens.
