Where only a week ago stood a grand and golden statue of The Great Helsman, now there is nothing but dust, dirt and a few left over stones.
The internet was shocked earlier last week when a gargantuan 37-meter-tall sculpture of Mao Zedong appeared out of nowhere in the middle of a field in Henan. They were even more shocked when it was swiftly wiped from the face of the Earth only a few days later.
This must have also come as quite the surprise to the local entrepreneurs who fronted some 3 million yuan for the construction of the project only to have it unceremoniously torn down by the dogmatic Tongxu Cultural Affairs Bureau complaining that the Mega Mao lacked the proper permits to be causing China some light-hearted international embarrassment.
While state media seems to not have been allowed to document the actual deconstruction process, pictures have now been published showing the former site of The Colossus of Tongxu, turned back into a wasteland with few remaining traces of its former glory.
‘My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!’
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.”
Here’s one last look at the glory and the majesty that has now been so cruelly erased from this Earth:
We can only hope that this random field in the middle of nowhere, Henan, will now turn into the next go-to red tourism holy ground.
