A two-year-old girl in Jiangxi province suffered the loss of part of an extremity on Saturday, after her hand was trapped in an escalator in a shopping center in Ji’an city. Unsupervised by parents, the girl had a fall on the floor-plate of an escalator between levels 1 and 2, causing her hand to get stuck between the floor and machinery.
She was taken to hospital, then later transferred to a higher level facility in nearby Nanchang city.
The incident occurred while the toddler’s father was distracted chatting with friends. At the time, the mother was located in a nearby restaurant where they were supposed to be sharing a meal.
A maintenance worker managed to retrieve the severed half-finger. However, it is unknown whether or not surgeons were able to successfully reattach it to the victim’s hand.
This incident is just the latest in a series of bloody and even fatal freak escalator accidents in China. Comparatively speaking, this little Jiangxi girl has been fortunate to escape with lesser injury. In the meantime, local safety authorities are investigating the incident.
