A group of 30 camouflaged party-poopers rocked up to the scene with a bulldozer on Thursday morning, intent on laying waste to the Fourth Hospital of Zhengzhou University without deigning to tell the people still inside. Although there were no casualties, 4 million yuan ($600,000) worth of radiological equipment was damaged in the surprise demolition.
According to the firsthand account of one hospital official surnamed Yuan, most people inside the building at the time fled once demolition began, including patients receiving radiological inspections.
There was then a showdown between the hospital staff and bulldozer crew. Staff were injured in their largely unsuccessful attempts to protect the medical equipment.
Apparently, the hospital has been clashing with the local Huiji district government over a road expansion project, the latter demanding relocation of the CT room and morgue. The hospital’s gates and another two-story building were already taken down late last year.
Following serious condemnation from across China, the local official responsible for the ill-timed demolition has been sacked. In addition, the bulldozer driver has been detained. A special team from the Zhengzhou Municipal Government is currently investigating the case.
