While kidnapping stories are usually a parent’s worst nightmare, an unusual case of cowardice has resulted in a collective sigh of relief in Xinchang county, Zhejiang, where a failed kidnapper lured in his victim, only to return her back home within the same day.
Last Friday, a 10-year-old girl returning home from school accepted a motorbike ride home by a man surnamed Ye, aged 49, People’s Daily reports.
After failing to return home from school at the usual 3:30 p.m., the girl’s parents contacted police who reviewed surveillance camera footage from the area and spotted the girl on the bike. Meanwhile, other officers were analyzing different footage from more CCTV cameras and with the help of local villagers, were able to point out the suspected man from the footage.
The image of Ye was quickly uploaded to WeChat. Shortly afterward, Ye, presumably seeing the image and fearing capture, contacted the girl’s parents and told them they would be able to find their daughter at a bus terminal at 7 p.m. the same day.
If Ye was hoping for a clean getaway, it was already too late, as police had already arrived at his apartment and were waiting to take him into custody.
