An unconventional gang specializing in prostitution was sentenced earlier this week at a Guangzhou court, all the defendants were dudes who masqueraded on WeChat as pretty women to lure in clientele.
In total, 19 men were on trial, mostly 20-somethings. The enterprising guys used fake profile photos and altered voices in order to attract clients and offer their (online) services. Some even helped to organize meetings with actual female prostitutes.
The ring leader, surnamed Wan, received a 7-year sentence and a 300,000 yuan fine. Wan had previously served 4 years of jail time for theft.
Alongside Wan, two other leaders of the gang were given 5 and 6 year sentences respectively in addition to 100,000 yuan fines.
This story is merely the latest in an extensive series of recent arrests made by police in China’s war against prostitution. Yet despite the sobering number of arrests, it would seem sex work isn’t exactly slowing down and more and more people are stepping in to fill the void.
