One young Chinese footballer has made a sincere apology to Lionel Messi for being so darn cold to him when the football star showed up at his locker room as part of a reality TV show.
Producers likely thought that they would get some great shots of young kids jumping up and down with joy for getting to meet their hero. However, that’s not exactly the way things went with some players instead staying firmly glued to their seats and looking distinctly unimpressed at the smiling superstar.
The worst offender was a 16-year-old named Li Boxi. He became the main object of derision for his seeming reluctance to stand beside Messi.
Netizens criticized the young players’ arrogance and managed to hurl a couple of insults about China’s recent poor performance on the football field for good measure.
In response to the criticism, Li took to Weibo and made his apology:
“I want to apologize to Messi. It’s impolite to shake hands while not standing up. To be a football star, I have to be a better man. I will bear in mind this sentiment and try to improve my shortcomings.”
He went on to explain that at the time he had been unhappy because the reality show failed to organize an opportunity to actually play with the football star.
Well, an apology is certainly a sign of good sportsmanship, and hey, it’s not like he spit in the guy’s face or anything.
