It’s nearing Chinese New Year and that means a time when good bosses will shower their staff with cash bonuses and sexy swag, while bad bosses will try to do whatever the hell it takes to get out of paying their workers.
A group of migrant workers employed at a construction site in Jiangxi’s Shangrao Economic Development Zone finally got fed up with their cheap boss withholding their wages. In a desperate attempt to finally get paid, they hauled 12 pieces of scaffolding to the parking lot and encased one of their employer’s cars inside.
One of the angry workers told reporters that the company still owes him some 70,000 RMB ($10,000), according to People’s Daily. He seems pretty determined to get it.
Last year in China, there were 4,815 complaints filed by workers about the nonpayment of wages. For many of China’s estimated 274 million migrant workers, the weeks leading up to the Spring Festival break can be quite stressful as they worry about whether their employer’s will try to screw them over, causing them to return home with nothing.
In the past, this has led to some desperate actions on the part of the migrants, like one man in Yunnan last year who drank pesticide in protest of unpaid wages or another man who resorted to dangling off a 12-meter oil tank.
