Images of a woman clipping her toenails in the middle of a crowded subway carriage on the Shanghai Metro have been making rounds on the internet after being uploaded by a fellow passenger.
The pictures were uploaded on Friday by Weibo user @NEMO双子座. While only reaching a limited audience on social media, the post was subsequently picked up by the majority of China’s largest internet portals.
Netizens have left their comments in droves, with many questioning why no-one stepped forward to intervene. Others left far more scathing or sarcastic responses.
Web user SXIJJJSEADS wrote, “This woman cutting her toe-nails is really outstanding. In her we see, class, style, respect, honour, and 5,000 years of culture.”
wanghuan231 said, “Foreigners look down on us, it turns out that we do have a problem. I bet that when this woman returns home she probably takes a shit at the dinner table.”
A user from Beijing wrote, “This is China, this is China, if you don’t like it then emigrate and stop making a fuss. This woman has finally recovered her dignity, her life is worthy of our respect, we should support these kinds of people!”
