We’ve seen some rather ostentatious weddings in the past, but this Guangdong couple seems to have their priorities in the right place, donating their 1.8 million yuan wedding fund to support poverty-stricken mothers in their home city.
According to groom Zhan Yihao, he and new wife Chen Youjia were planning an opulent ceremony, but chose instead to give the money to 450 single mothers in Chaozhou who needed it more. China News reports that each woman received 4,000 yuan, ahead of the approaching Spring Festival.
The couple were inspired by Zhan’s father, Zhan Jianhua, an entrepreneur and charity enthusiast who’s donated 100 million yuan to various causes over the last two decades. Bride and groom thus enjoyed a more modest wedding on November 1st.
“Everyone may want to have a big wedding, but no matter how luxurious it is, it will soon be gone,” Zhan Yihao said sagely.
Meanwhile, an official from the local women’s federation praised the couple’s generosity. “The money will go to help impoverished mothers,” she said. “At least they will be able enjoy the upcoming Spring Festival holiday with their children.”
Tis the season for giving it seems as various cities across China are setting up “Walls of Kindness” to help out those less fortunate during winter.
