Just in time for the Chinese New Year, another heartwarming turtle smuggling story on Shanghaiist, this time taking place in our very own city. Fortunately, these little guys weren’t stuffed into someone’s pants, instead, they were crammed inside stuffy plastic boxes with their friends, family and no food or fresh air. Awesome.
Last Wednesday, Shanghai Customs announced that in November 2015 they had intercepted a suspicious set of packages containing more than 2,000 turtles. We really wish we knew why the containers were so suspicious, alas police did not say.
However, they did report that the packages contained many endangered species mixed in, including black pond turtles, Amboina box turtles and pig-nosed turtles. But turtles weren’t the only illegal passengers in the boxes, as accompanying the little guys were an upper layer of crabs, which no doubt made excellent company as the animals were sent to their doom. Overall, it sounds like a turtle disaster for the shellfish smugglers.
Luckily, the case has been handed over to the anti-smuggling department for further digging, and the little guys were sent to zoos in Shanghai. Hopefully they can have a better time there than in plastic boxes, but even then we can’t be sure. As for the crabs? No idea. Sweet freedom? Probably not.
