An eventful week on the Hong Kong MTR ended on quite the frightening note last Thursday when video appeared online showing one male passenger, fed up with a kid’s constant crying, totally lose it.
The man who took the video told Apple Daily that in fact the man’s terrifying reaction only came after the child had been incessantly wailing for four consecutive stops. The man in the video had tried asking “very nicely” before for the mom to get her kid under control, but eventually he just “snapped and lost control.”
He suddenly darts to the stroller, pulls the screen up, and scream’s right in the poor kid’s face, even shaking the stroller for good measure. He then gets into a loud argument with the toddler’s mother about her responsibilities and his own methods. Because the mother speaks Mandarin in the video, she is believed to be from the mainland.
Of course, this has led to yet another online debate about public politeness and common courtesy. Many netizens were aghast at the man’s reaction and applauded the mom for her restraint:
“If that was my kid, he [the man] would have been the one crying in the end,” commented one netizen on Facebook.
“How does he think that shouting at him like that is going to stop him from crying?” wondered another web user.
Still others put most of the blame on the mom for not being able to quiet down her kid.
“Kid’s cry, of course, but four straight stops is just too much! I could see how that guy could go a bit crazy,” commented one netizen.
Earlier last week, photos went viral showing a woman squatting down and taking a crap on the floor inside the Tsim Tsa Tsui Station, once again renewing calls from Hong Kongers against “uncivilized mainlanders” visiting their city. In 2014, a group of angry Hong Kongers held “poop protests” in the city after similar incidents.
It seems that this time they are taking a more direct approach.
