The five Hong Kong booksellers, Peter Dahlin, Li Xin and now possibly Kang Kang the Monkey, Chinese netizens are currently in a panic trying to locate the whereabouts of the CCTV Spring Festival Gala mascot after he was a complete no-show on Sunday night.
Sadly, Kang Kang wasn’t exactly well-liked before his mysterious disappearance, netizens mercilessly mocked the monkey’s design when it was unveiled in January, calling it ugly and tumor-ridden. They believe that a serious mistake had been made when translating the cute monkey sketch into 3D, with his paws being mistaken for a pair of strange balls on his face. Judge for yourself:
But now they just wish they could take it all back, because by the time that the Gala started, Kang Kang had gone AWOL, not making a single appearance in the 4.5-hour long show.
In fact, the last time anyone saw him was in a promo video before the Gala. Adding to the mystery, his infamous face “tumors” had been removed.
After the Gala ended, all anyone could talk about, except for dancing robots, was “Where did Kang go?” That question became a trending topic on Weibo.
Netizens came up with a variety of reasons why Kang Kang hadn’t shown up to his gig. Perhaps he had been kidnapped by anti-party elements? Maybe his tumors didn’t make it past rigorous Gala security checks? What if he just knew it was going to suck and didn’t show up?
Meanwhile, some netizens just couldn’t find the words, so they expressed their feelings through art.
At the moment, Kang Kang’s face remains up on the top of CCTV’s Facebook page. Maybe there is still hope? A tearful confession on the horizon?
