In the course of two days, from February 14th to February 16th, not one but two sperm whales beached themselves on the shores of Nantong city in Jiangsu province.
The first unfortunate whale was discovered early on the morning of February 14th in Nantong city’s Yangkou harbor. Experts have determined it is a male (good job, experts!) and measured 15 meters in length and weighed approximately 33 tons, Xinhua reports.
The second whale beached itself just two days later, and was discovered by fishermen about 7 or 8 kilometers southeast of the first near the Yellow River Bridge. Once again experts were called in and were able to determine that it was also a male, 15.6 meters in length and weighing over 50 tons.
In a report carried by the SCMP, one local villager, Yin Qiufeng, said that when he first spotted the whale, he mistook it for a capsized ship.
“In the beginning I didn’t dare go too close to have a better look because I thought it was still alive, but later I found out it was already dead,” he said.
Scientists have since managed to transport the bodies of the enormous whales away for further study.
A similar incident occurred back in November when a dead 3.9-ton whale appeared on a beach in Shandong.
