A man from Putian, Fujian province has refuted claims that he gifted 100 million yuan, a private jet and wedding gifts worth 6 million yuan to his wife. Rightly so, because who the heck gives away that much?
A clearing up of rumors became necessary after Chinese netizens saw the story online and went to town on the poor guy, labeling him as a show off and saying the bride had literally struck gold by marrying the man. But last Thursday, the man cleared up the mess and told Chinese reporters that the rumors were totally unfounded, Ifeng reports.
He explained that marrying early wasn’t uncommon for his area, and the couple had dated for a year before marrying on February 13th. He refused to reveal how much he had actually given in gifts and dowry, saying that even if he told the truth no one would believe him anyway. He also stated that both he and his wife came from entrepreneurial families, so their backgrounds were quite compatible.
He claims to have no idea who created the outlandish rumors, and also has no clue why someone would even do it. While his family is admittedly well-off, the idea of sending such a massive gift was shocking to him, and when the news broke, he was furious at the amount of calls and messages he received about it.
Unfortunately, the man is now afraid of the flack he might receive at university, where he is currently a third-year student, and he hopes that the all the talk will die down soon.
He’ll be happy to know that by now most of the Internet has moved on to talking about two 16-year-olds getting married.
